Hey... I need some advice as a prospective ROM hacker.

RomanCandle — Thu, 07/29/2010 - 00:35

I hope this isn't being too noobish... basically I want to learn to hack ROMs. However, I'm more interested in hacking PSX/PS2 and Dreamcast ROMs. I was ready to start slow and go with NES/SNES ROMs first but I was doing some research online and I read that some parts of hacking the more advanced systems' ROMs is easier, and that it could be easier to start by hacking those ROMs. So I thought I'd ask here... how should I go about starting to hack ROMs?

For clarification, I'm most interested in doing translation.

Also, is there a good online resource for learning to hack PSX/PS2/Genesis ROMs? I can't seem to find one.

Thanks a bunch to anyone who responds or even reads this.

I would suggest staying far away from PSX/PS2 hacking for now. I personally think that SNES is easier than NES. The more tools available the easier it is as well.

Start off with some simple graphics hacks, move on to some text changing, then learn how to extract and insert scripts via Atlas, and finally read up on assembly and look at some example source code on RHDN.
